7 Low Cost Home Improvements You Can do Yourself that Increase Home Value

Low Cost Home Improvements

My wife and I have owned two homes and currently in the process of buying our third home. Needless to say, we are learning quite a few tricks to instantly increase the value of the homes we buy. There are several low cost home improvements we have done that have made a big impact to the appeal of the home that you may be able to use in your home! Here are our 7 best DIY improvements you can do to add value to the home.

Paint, Paint, Paint

A fresh coat of paint can totally change the feel of the room. It can help you mask knicks, scuffs, and stains on the wall, making your home’s interior more attractive.

Replace the Hardware in Your Home

Is your hardware, such as door knobs and cabinet handles, beat up or dated? It might be time to replace it. Replacing the hardware alone can make your kitchen or bathroom feel rejuvenated. You can buy hardware at Lowe’s, Home Depot, or any local hardware store.

Give Your Lawn a Little Love

The most cost effective way to improve curb appeal is to maintain a well manicured yard. It is relatively inexpensive and easy to do yourself to fertilize, cut, trim, and edge the yard. With a little love your yard can give your home a great curb appeal quickly.

Energy Efficient Home

Efficient homes in general are more attractive for buyers. Having Energy Star appliances, LED light bulbs, timers, etc. can all drastically improve the home’s energy efficiency, lowering your utility bills while increasing your home’s value. This is an easy one because you only replace appliances, light bulbs, and other items as you need it. Meaning you don’t need to go buy an entire appliance set for your kitchen today.

Refinish Existing Cabinets and Vanities

Here was our kitchen before refinishing the cabinets.

You can easily sand down and restain or repaint cabinets and vanities to give your kitchen or bathroom a fresh look. When we refinished our bathroom vanities and kitchen cabinets, we used Extreme Bond from Sherwin Williams for the primer and painted them gray.

Definitely a fresher look!

Maintain, Maintain, Maintain

Routine maintenance of your home is of utmost importance for both health and safety. This means changing out the furnace filter, changing out the water filter, and regularly servicing your HVAC. If you have a heavily wooded yard, be sure leaves are cleaned up and the trees don’t damage your roof, gutters, or home.

Feng Shui

Create good vibes in your home through feng shui. You can accomplish this by simply decluttering your home, keep your entryways clear and open, and maximize as much natural light as you can.

There are many other ways to help improve the value of your home but these some of my favorite ways because they create an immediate sense of gratification and comfort without emptying your bank account.
